Vanitas Extended is a group exhibition curated by Nathalie Vanheule for which 14 (inter)national artists present their work in museums, the public sphere, the cultural centre and on historical sites of the city of Ypres, Belgium. The exhibition questions the term ‘Vanitas’ and its place within the transience of today. The selected works transcend tradition, constructed with contemporary stones of contemporary builders; a semicircle of international artists. Inertia, antiquity and their connection to the forbiddingness of death become echoes in image and sound of vanitas’ rich history.
